Please Pray

One of the ladies who writes for the Heart of the Matter Online homeschool magazine is in need of prayer. Her name is Marsha. Their three year old son, Christian, went missing. Two and half hours later divers pulled him from the pond behind their home. Marsha, her husband, and two other children need prayer. Please lift them up today and in the coming days and months ahead
(even longer). Heart of the Matter is celebrating little Christian's life today, stop by and let Marsha and her family know that you are praying for them.

Pray For Max

I would like to ask you to please pray for my nephew, Max. He is having surgery tomorrow to have a tracheotomy. He is a sweet little baby. He has what most likely is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. He has also been neglected. He is very weak and fighting for his life right now and a tracheotomy is the only option the doctors see for any improvement. He is 15 months old and tops out at a whopping 11 pounds! He can not even hold up his head, roll over, and only hums. Please, please be in prayer for this little one. No matter what the problems are, he is still a precious creation of God! Our family would love to adopt him, love, nurture, and care for him! Please pray concerning that and if it be God's will. Thank you all for your prayers!

The Wrangell Garnet

Along our ferry trip, we made several port calls. We only ventured onto land twice though. Our entire family left the ship to go into Ketchican, Alaska. Then my hubby took a few of the older children ashore in Wrangell, Alaska. In Wrangell the Presbyterian church owns a parcel of land, the Garnet Mine, that is full of garnets. These church gave the town access to this land and the garnets with the condition that all proceeds went to benefit the children of Wrangell. Due to this, when you enter into Wrangell from the ferry there are children selling garnets. The children can dig, clean, and sell them to tourists. My husband blessed me by purchasing one for me. The garnet he purchased is still on a small piece rock. I have thought often on this little treasure that we picked up on your travels. The garnet is pretty yet still partially set in the stone. It is a reminder of myself. I strive to be that ruby, that jewel among jewels, something pleasing, precious, and glorifying to God. Most jewels are formed by time and pressure. This is the same in our spiritual lives as well. Over time walking with the Lord and working with him through the pressures and trials in our lives is what turns us into the jewels that he desires to transform us into being. The jewels are still stuck in stone however. This is a reminder that not only do I need to trust and lean upon the Lord but I must also allow him to chip away at the stones of sin in my life. This is a painful process but a necessary one.

As I look upon my treasured Wrangell Garnet, I smile at the fact that it was a church that offered them to the community. This is what the church is about, not only sharing the Gospel of Christ with others but also the discipleship, work, discipline, growth, dependency, pruning, and commitment that comes along with being a recipient of such amazing grace. It takes time, pressure, molding, chiseling, and chipping to be transformed into and to reveal the great jewel that the recipients of this amazing grace are to become.

Happy Birthday Moriah Faith!

Today is our little one's second birthday! We named her Moriah Faith. This name is representative of the great faith theatAbraham displayed on Mt. Moriah when he was commanded by the Lord to sacrifice his promised son. She has been a child in which the Lord has strengthened our faith! We had a traumatic and scary start with her when she was born and more stresses when she was young. God was faithful in bringing healing to her. We are so blessed by this little one! She is smart, spunky, and sweet! I would not trade her for anything in the world! I love you darling girl!

Pvt. Nathan Z. Thacker had only been in the country for two weeks before his death, according to the soldier's father, Stephen Thacker.

Thacker's father said his son felt a duty to enlist. "He said it was his job. Even after he got his orders that he was going over there, he said it's his job."

Thacker had attended Guy-Perkins High School in Guy, Arkansas. He earned his GED in 2006, his father said. Thacker enlisted in the Army in April 2007 and completed his training at Fort Benning, Ga. He arrived at Fort Drum in August 2007. His honors include the Purple Heart.

"Nathan was an excellent man," sister Sabrina Black said. "He loved me, I loved him, and I¢d give anything to have him back."

Pvt. Thacker was killed when an IED was detonated near his vehicle near Kirkuk. Three other soldiers were injured in the attack.

Pvt. Thacker is survived by his parents, siblings and his grandfather.

The Beginning of the Ferry Trip

I was finally able to upload some photos! YEAH! Here are a few photos of the beginning of our ferry trip! There is a photo of the ferry terminal and one of me driving on to the ferry. My hubby didn't get to drive on at the same time. He drove on about an hour and a half later. The third photo is of Bellingham, Washington. We departed from Bellingham. The red boat in the photo is our Coast Guard escourt. The final photo is of our children in the rain out on the deck. More to come as I am able to get them uploaded!

A Busy and Fun Filled Weekend

My hubby had a few days off and we have had a great time getting to enjoy our new surroundings. We had an inspection on the house and have submitted a list of repairs to the current owner. We should know where we are going with that later this coming week.

We took a day and headed out of town and stopped at Beluga Point but didn't actually see any whales. It is only a few miles out of town so we will have many more opportunities to catch a glimpse of the ocean wildlife. We headed down the Seward Highway and stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Refuge. It was great! We were able to see Alaskan wildlife up close. The brown bears were in the pond playing with the fish and having a grand time. It did rain most of the day but with our new rain/water proof jackets from REI we still had a fun and fairly dry time.

After the Conservation Refuge we headed to Portage and their visitor center. It is so much fun to be able to see glacier after glacier, waterfall after waterfall, and icebergs in the lake! It is so beautiful and creation most definitely displays the glory of the Lord!

We took some time to check out activities that the base offers. The children and my hubby spent some time climbing the rock wall and the little ones played on the indoor playground. We finished the day with a game of bowling and a dinner out.

We had a good day today and were able to take time out as we should to fellowship with other believers and worship the Lord. I can tell that we have been busy because starting yesterday were the ever so fun contractions! They are starting earlier than usual, I still have three months to go! So I am off to rest and put my feet up!

We are thoroughly enjoying being here in Alaska! How are things in your neck of the woods??? May the Lord bless you!

New Commenting Rules

Up until recently I have not had too many difficulties with anonymous comments, this has changed. I have found lately that most of the anonymous comments have become controversial, dissenting, and often with an ulterior motive other than just honest discussion or curiosity. I often wonder why people who write such comments do not have the courage to sign their name to their comments. This is starting to become a trend here on my blog and since this has happened I have changed the settings to no longer allow anonymous comments. I am sorry if you are an anonymous commenter with no intention of disruptive remarks. I guess all I am saying is if you are feeling the need to leave a comment, even one in honest disagreement is okay, just be big enough to attach your name to your comment.

Thank you!

Company C, 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division
March 9, 2005
U.S. Army

Spc. Matthew A. Koch was on his second tour of duty when he was killed by an IED that was detonated near his vehicle in Taji. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He previously was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon and medals for service in the fight against terrorism.

Koch enlisted in the Army in January 2002 after the attacks on September 11, 2001 and re-enlisted because he wanted to help the Iraqi people. "He was a brave soldier who made the greatest sacrifice anyone could make for everyone else's freedom," Diane Worman, Koch's mother, said through tears. "He realized that by being over there, he was going to make a difference in the lives of those people." She said her son once unsuccessfully sought green cards for an Iraqi family that had been threatened for helping Americans.

"He always looked out for the other guy, never thought of himself. He volunteered to go to C Co before our first deployment so that one of the guys from our Platoon didn't have to deploy early and would have a chance to marry his fiance. That's Koch for you, always looking out for his buddies." - David A. "Buch" Buchanan.

"He really loved the service and went back," said James Worman, Koch's stepfather. "He had no problem. He was dedicated to the fact that people over there needed help. He was always concerned about other people. He loved children. He was a nice, soft-hearted kid."

Passing Up The Good

Have you ever been in a place where you had a difficult decision and one of great consequence? We are currently in that place. We are looking for a home to purchase. I mentioned a week ago that we thought we had found one. The housing here for a large family is limited and for our price range has very little to offer. Last week we had finally decided on one house in particular. It was small but it had a great yard was very pretty. It had a Chakuzzi (as our 4 year says jacuzzi) but we were going to have to put in a wall and take one of the living areas for a bedroom. It was a nice home with the least amount of work but was at the top of our budget limit. We made an offer on the house but there was still nervousness in our spirits.

This was a good house, we would be very cramped but considering the other options this was the cream of the crop and it had the least amount of remodeling. We went to the home several times to try and figure out the best way to make it work for our family deciding that maybe we were just going to have to settle and make do with what was available.

The owners came back with a counter offer that we were just not very comfortable with but looking at the market there just were not really any other options. So now we had a big decision to make. Do we take this house which is a good home because there are no other options or do we pass it up praying that something new will emerge. Making this even more difficult is seeing our current living circumstances. All 10 of us are crammed into a 2 and half bedroom and one bath little hotel apartment. We are also paying to kennel our dogs and each day that passes costs more and more. To be honest it is a difficult thing not to look at current circumstances for our guidance but to look past them to what the Lord has in store.

After pleading in prayer with the Lord for wisdom, guidance, his provision in our lives, and a calm assurance of which home to purchase, I decided to do yet another search for homes. I did a search for large square footage homes regardless of a bedroom count. God providentially gave us a listing we had not seen before. This is very clear in my mind. I am so thankful for a Lord who has my life mapped out before me.

We were making one last trip to the home we were looking at to make our final decision about the counter offer and decided to go and look at two other homes while we were out. One was a home mentioned to us by someone my hubby works with and the other is the listing I just mentioned.

After returning to the home we were considering our nervousness and somewhat hopelessness for anything more both began to grow. We had to make a decision within a few hours to meet the deadline. We went to one of the other homes and it brought no fresh hope to our situation. Again, do we go for the good house which needed the least amount of work but was going to cost so much we would not even have the money to do the work? But other prospects were dwindling quickly. I was at a loss on what to do. Hubby was leaning toward declining the counter offer and wait for the Lord to open something else knowing full well there was nothing at the present time. I will be honest and tell you fear was growing with in me. I was again pleading with the Lord for guidance, direction, wisdom, and assurance.

We drove out to the property that the Lord brought to our attention earlier that morning. It was only listed as a three bedroom but had a boatload of square footage and listed other rooms. The trend we had experienced was that these other rooms are usually so dinky you could do nothing with them but with the large square footage it was worth a look. As we drove into the drive way there was a sparkling of hope. Thank you Lord! As we walked through the home our anxiety lessened and peace began to fall over us. This home is a 3300 sq/ft house (8 rooms to use for bedrooms, a formal dining area, living room, family room), on 1/2 acre with a babbling stream running along the edge of the property. There is a close mountain view and sunshine (which is great to have here in Alaska). There is also a 1200 sq/ft detatched heated 2 car garage that is tall enough to even park the van in and has a "cabin appartment" we can fix up for Jacob to have his own place when he starts college. The price is $35 Thousand dollars LESS than the house we were considering and the sellers are paying all of the closing costs! There is still some work to do, mostly just cosmetic updating, but with the lower price and all closing costs covered there will be money to do the improvements we would like to make.

After viewing the property and driving the neighborhood we came to a peacful conclusion that the Lord had answered our prayers. There was peace and no questioning. God had provided above and beyond anything we could have imagined! we declined the counter offer on the previous home and placed an offer on this home before even leaving the street and it was accepted without any debating. We are now waiting for a home inspection, an enginering report on the septic system and the well, and the financing process(for which we are currently pre-approved). Things could fall through and the home is not ours until the last signature is signed and the keys are handed over but we have seen the hand of the Lord at work in our lives. We have learned to pass up the good for the Lord's best. This is never an easy thing to do but each time you do it is even more amazing to see the Lord work and providentially provide in abundance in one's life.

I would like to ask you to continue to pray for us concerning this home and if all goes as it seems to be I will post photos for you to see later. God continually reminds me of his provision and his goodness. I would like to encourage you all to remember his provision and his goodness. Be willing to pass up the good for God's best.

QF Carnival #6

For this carnival I would like to highlight the story of a couple of the ladies on the blogroll. First is Suzanne from the Beauty of it All. She has shared with us in a four part posting. Take some time and visit her blog.

A Heritage From The Lord Part Four

The other post I would like to highlight today is posted by the McAfee Family. Here is one statement from their post I would like to share with you.

Being a quiverful family is a daily struggle and is not an easy path but it is a worthy conviction and I pray that God will bless us all!
Take a few minutes and pop on over to read their story, A Quiverfull Life.

Next is Mandy Mom. She is a new member to our blogroll. If you have not stopped by her site yet then you are missing out on a treat. She shares her families journey in the post I will highlight here. Mandy shares about the many justifications that they used and how God brought them to a place of realizing they were simply that, justifications. How God revealed His will to them and brought them to where they are now. Her post was a great blessing to me! Take a moment and read her post, Fill My Quiver.

For more great quiverfull testimonies follow the links below.

Do you hold to and live out the same convictions?
Check out the Quiverfull Blogroll

Take some time out today and browse through these ladies' posts. Please come back here and let me know which one has blessed you the most or made you think and evaluate.
I would love your input! (Just be polite *grin*)

Baby Update

I finally was able to get in at the OB clinic. It had been 6 weeks since my last appointment. To be honest there were a few things that had me concerned. However, everything is looking good! Baby's heartbeat is strong and I am measuring right on with my dates. I am of course experiencing some of the not-so-fun parts of pregnancy but I am so thankful that things are going well and that the baby is strong.

Now What Is Up???

I HAD a treat for you all today. I was going to do a great Wordless Wednesday with photos from our ferry trip throught the inner passage. This internet service we have at the TLF (temporary living facility) on base is almost as bad as dial up and I have not been able to get one single photo to load onto blogger. It has been rather frustrating to say the least. The photos will have to wait a bit longer!

We have spent several days looking at houses. We went from excited to discouraged to extremely discouraged to slightly optomistic to total confusion and on and on. I never thought it would be this difficult! I find myself totally exhausted at the end of the day! I think we may have actually found one home that we can make work for us. We will still be a bit scrunched in there but when we see the limited homes available this one seems to be the best match. We have been in prayer over this and are beginning to move ahead. I am trying not to let myself get too excited because there are so many variables that come into play when looking to purchase a home. Please please be in prayer for us concerning this.

On another note..... our eldest is off today taking a practice GED test. We are hoping to get him to pass his GED and to begin college in January. We shall see what is in store. They do not have much of a dual credit/running start program here as they did in previous states that we have lived in. They do have one but we must register in the IDEA program and I am just not comfortable getting involved in a government funded homeschool program especially when HSLDA will not represent those enrolled since it is not considered "homeschool" because of the government ties. Anyway, the rest of our school year may be getting started late. We will have to find a home, move in, unpack, order curriculum, schedule and lesson plans finished before any real schooling can even begin. I do have a great new school organizer that I will share with you once I can load photos!

Oh, some EXCITING news! The other night we had a bear digging through the dumpster and leaving his um...mess..behind in the yard. The dumpster is only about 20 steps from our door! Unfortunately we were all asleep and missed the whole ordeal but it is still exciting to think of the wildlife being that close!

Well, we are off to look at closet organizers at Lowe's today. That will be fun to share once we have a home to get it all set up and organized! I will share that in several months when all is said and done!

ONE LAST THING!

THANK YOU! For continuing to stop by here showing your encourement and support!

Scriptural/Christianity Posts Continued

Continuing from a previous post...looking into posts from the past. Once again, please leave your comments here and let the discussion begin!

Scriptural/Christianity Posts

Last month I posted a survey about asking my readers which posts they most enjoy. You have answered and I am so thankful for your input. As many know my family is in a state of transition at the moment and my internet access is limited. Until we have a permanent place to live and our household goods delivered I am limited to the library computer. Since one area many of my readers enjoy is the area of Scriptural/Christianity, I decided to post today with some links to past posts in this category. Many of my regular readers most likely will have read them already but you never know if there might be a new reader lurking. *grin*

Please, Please, Please come back to THIS post and leave your comments. Let me know which is your favorite, which one you can relate to, which ones you agree with, which ones you might not agree with, which ones made you think, or anything else.

Some Random Thoughts

I just thought that I would share a few random thoughts this morning. I know I need to take some time and write some posts with a bit of "substance" but I need to compose my thoughts. It has really been a whirlwind of a month and even though I have the relief of having finally arrived at our destination there is still so much we need to accomplish.

There are several of us that are sick, myself included. We have some nasty colds. This has of couse been compounded by varying allergies, continual altitude and temperature changes. I am drinking alot of OJ and we are running out of allergy medicine.

Hubby is trying to get checked into the base and let all of the right people know that we are here but this may prove to be more difficult than it normally would be. We found out via a hotel clerk the other day that the wing commander was found dead of a gunshot wound, Sunday I believe. The memorial service we found out is today so the chaplains office is understandable otherwise occupied.

I am also needing to get in to the doctor since it has been 5 weeks or so since I have seen the OB. At least I have some baby movement so I am not too concerned but it is time to get in for a check-up.

We are enjoying the daylight, though very little sunshine. The children are having a harder time trying to convince themselves that going to bed is a good idea. I have no problem goinbg to bed at 10 or 11 with it being light out but the children still want to stay up. The one thing that the older children do not seem to understand is that the little ones get up with the sun which means I do too! I am sooo tired! Oh well, that comes with motherhood. I will just have to make a point of getting in a nap this afternoon. I do have a ton of laundry to do today though. Only half of our clothes are dirty but they are the ones for the cooler weather here in Alaska not the ones for hot San Antonio so I have to get the laundry running! There is a nice wooden park a block over from where we are staying so I am sure the children will enjoy playing over there often while I am working away on the laundry.

We still have to go house hunting and exploring the area. I MUST find that Costco in town! I know that I will have to start thinking about school again soon but I really cannot do much as most of our school supplies are packed in the crates which I will not have access to until we have a home. Please pray for us in finding the home that God has prepared for us and that we can get into it soon. Not only for the sake of being settled, getting out our school supplies and getting started on that but because we are praying for our dogs to be kennelled and that adds up quickly.

Well, it is after 9 am and I am not even showered or dressed so I had better get on the move! Thanks for reading my ramblings and I will get to work on some "meaningful" posts soon!!

Where We Are In Our Travels

Well, the ferry trip was wonderful! It took us through such beautiful places! I did get seasick and lost my lunch but only once and it was out in open water rather than the milder water. Our one child that with ADHD had a tense first day on the ferry too. I think she has some anxiety issues also. The first night was stressful for her and all three of her ticks were manifested again and in succession as well as a return of the bedwetting which of course brought many tears. After the first night though things were back to normal and she had a wonderful time.

We were able to see humpbacks, orcas, porpoises, and bald eagles. Our drive through Canada was fun also. We saw several bears, swans, and a fox. We are still looking for the moose but am sure they will be in view before long. The scenery is so beautiful! God is such an awesome creator!

Prices are very shocking though! I knew it was expensive but give me a break! $7 for a gallon of milk, $5 for a package of bologna, $6 a gallon on gasoline, and a 20 ounce diet dr. pepper cost my hubby $3 today!

Alaska is a bit cheaper than Canada was but it is still costly. I think hubby filled up for $4.80 a gallon tonight. Well, we are settling down and getting children ready for bed and should arrive in Anchorage tomorrow. So until I get another chance........that is the update! Hopefully, photos will come soon!

Why we Homeschool

There are many different reasons people decide to homeschool their children. I would like to share with you today why our family homeschools. Being fully aware of our reasons propels us forward and it gives us purpose. Placing these reasons ever before us pushes us on toward our goal.

I believe that as a Christian parent it is part of my duty as a mother. Parents are responsible for their children and their training. Christian parents are to raise them in the training and admonition of the Lord. We will be held accountable for what we have done with the blessings God bestows upon us. Most know these verses below as they are considered foundational verses for home education.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 ?Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

This encompasses every aspect of life, at all times and in all things. I do not believe this can be fully accomplished if the responsibility is abdicated to others and children are put under the authority of those who disagree with the biblical approach to every aspect of life or are obligated to teach using a secular curriculum with a humanistic and atheistic approach. There truly is no real neutrality. Here is a quote from a book I have read recently, it gives a good summary. This is enough to propel me to move forward and count the rewards when I am feeling overwhelmed. It is what God has called me to do as a Christian mother.
The biblical mind is not compartmentalized into two distinct areas of though: secular and sacred. All of life is under the authority of God's revealed Word, and children were to be taught in terms of this comprehensive authority all the time.

from: Standing on the Promises by Doug Wilson

I acknowledge that all will not agree with my reasons for homeschooling. Many will have other reasons and some will just flat out disagree and that is ok. We have our reasons and they are grounded in the Word. These reasons as propel to continue on our homeschooling journey. When we have a frustrating day, they urge us forward and help to keep us focused.

Bring the Rain - Mercy Me

Boarding the Ferry

Well, today is the day that we board the ferry. We have to arrive 3 hours early for boarding. I will post more about our ferry trip once we get settled with a permanent computer. For now, I thought I would share about the ferry we are traveling on. This information is from the Alaska Marine Highway website. This is a photo of the actual vessel we are traveling on and details concerning the ship. It looks to be a fun and exciting three days! More Later......

The M/V Columbia is the largest vessel of the Marine Highway fleet. Launched by Lockheed Shipbuilding in Seattle in 1974, the Columbia is 418 feet long, with capacity for 499 passengers and 134 vehicles (20' lengths). Its 103 total cabins include 44 four-berth units, and 56 two-berth units, 3 of which are wheelchair accessible. The Columbia boasts both a fine dining room and a cafeteria. The gift shop, cocktail lounge, solarium, and forward observation lounge round out the passenger amenities. Photo by Captain Jack Meyers

Moving Update

Here I sit in my hotel room wishing I was already asleep. I am finding that I am tiring easily. We spent almost two weeks in the Spokane area. Our older children were able to attend camp and we had a great time visiting family and a few friends. There were many more people we would have liked to see but there is only so much time. We did take the opportunity to do a few other things that we enjoy in the area.

We all finally feel as if we are moving. Before it just felt as if we were coming home from a year long vacation. Now that we are somewhere that we have not been before it is beginning to feel like we are on the move.

The children are beginning to show the strain of traveling for so long a period of time and are a little bit tired and cranky but I think that will settled down with the adventure ahead of us for the next week of travels.

Thank you those who are praying for us! I will check back in as time and access to the web allows. May God's riches blessings be upon you all and may you be aware enough to recognize them!

Seven Secrets for Wives - Day 8 - Secret #7

STRENGTHEN YOUR COMMITMENT TO YOUR MARRIAGE.

Marriage is not a contract. It is a covenant, made before God and witnesses. Marriage is not a fuzzy feeling of love. It is a commitment. It is a commitment to build a godly marriage that is a picture to the world of Christ and His bride. It is a commitment to build a family and raise a godly seed. It won?t always be easy. It?s hard work. But we are committed to the task. We take no notice of difficulties. We are not daunted by problems. We keep on with the task, because we are committed to a vision of building a godly generation. We are not concerned only with the present, but with the future, and the generations to come. We have no thought of quitting because we know that it would affect not only our children now, but also the generations to follow. We keep pressing on toward the goal, pushing through the mountains of difficulties, as we trust in our God.

Got any rivers you think are uncrossible?
Got any mountains you can?t tunnel through?
God specializes in things thought impossible!
He can do what no other can do!

God is for your marriage. He will be with you to make it strong and precious. There may be times when the tide goes out on your marriage. When the tide goes out, you see all the ugly things on the beach. When the tide goes out on your marriage, the ugly things loom large. But don?t despair. Don?t look at the rubbish. Look to the Lord. There is a divine law I want to remind you about. The tide ALWAYS COMES IN AGAIN! If you are going through a tough time, hang on to God. The tide will come in again with love and blessing and reconciliation.
